Course Description

This on-demand course consists of the reformatted recordings of the “IHS Essential Training on Pain and Addiction” live webinars held in 2017.  The training focuses on providing knowledge on several topics including- pain management, aberrant behaviors, risk factors, opioid treatments, non-opioid treatments, non-pharmacological treatments, and pain prevalence. Case vignettes will use real-world examples of patient interactions and role-plays to learn how to address difficult issues and topics with patients.  Completion of this course meets the IHS mandated training for the prescribing and treatment of chronic pain and addiction.

At the conclusion of this online activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the epidemic of unintentional opiate overdose deaths.
  2. Implement the Institute of Medicine Guidelines for Best Practices in pain management.
  3. Safely prescribe opiate analgesics, with detailed equianalgesic dosing guidelines.

Instructions for Obtaining CE Credit

To earn CE credit, you must:

  1. Electronically enroll in the course
  2. View each of the videos in its entirety.  Partial credit is not available.
  3. Successfully complete the quiz at the end of each video. You will have two attempts to achieve a passing grade of 80% or higher.
  4. Complete the online course evaluation.
  5. Upon successful completion of all quizzes and evaluation, you will be able print your certificate.


Dental Continuing Education


The IHS Division of Oral Health is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.  This course has been approved for 5.5 hours of CDE credit under AGD Code 157, Substance Abuse.  To receive CDE credit, log into the IHS CDE website at, go to course DE0124 in the 2017 Course Catalog, and enter the completion code provided during the webinar.

Medical and Nursing Continuing Education


In support of improving patient care, IHS Clinical Support Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
